Moving from Swansea to Manchester

Manchester is one of the longer one day routes we run from Swansea. People move for work, for the universities, or to be closer to family in the North West, and we bring people back to South Wales too.

At this distance the planning matters more than on a Bristol or Cardiff move. An early start, an honest idea of when you will get your keys, and a parking plan at the Manchester end are what separate a calm day from a late finish.

The drive from Swansea to Manchester

There are two sensible ways north. The all motorway route follows the M4 to the M5 near Bristol, then the M5 up to the M6 around Birmingham and on towards Manchester. It is easy driving, but the M6 through the West Midlands is often slow.

The other option leaves the M4 at Newport and follows the A449 and A40 towards Ross, then the M50 to join the M5 further north. It is shorter, though more of it is on A roads. We choose on the day based on live traffic. Either way we plan on about 4 hours of driving plus a proper break, longer if the M6 is having a bad day. Leaving Swansea early helps us miss the worst of the Birmingham traffic.

One day or two days?

For a flat or a two or three bed house, Swansea to Manchester is normally a single long day. We start loading early in Swansea, aim to be on the motorway by late morning, and unload in the afternoon or early evening.

A two day plan often works better for a large house, a move with a lot of packing, or a completion where you will not get keys until mid afternoon. We load the day before, keep the loaded van locked overnight, and set off early so we arrive in Manchester ready to unload. The extra day adds to the cost, but it takes the pressure off everyone, including you.

What affects the price of a Swansea to Manchester move

Moves to Manchester cost more than shorter routes because of the extra hours and fuel, but the size of the move still matters more than the miles. These are the main factors.

How much you are moving

The amount of furniture and boxes sets the van size and crew. An accurate list means we can send the right van the first time instead of needing a second trip.

Time on the road

There and back is roughly eight hours of driving for the crew before any lifting starts. That time is part of every quote on this route.

City centre apartments

Many flats in Manchester and Salford city centres have a loading bay and a goods lift that must be booked, sometimes in set time slots. Book yours early and send us the details.

Parking on terraced streets

In areas like Chorlton, Didsbury, Levenshulme and Fallowfield, streets are narrow and lined with parked cars. Check with your council whether your street needs a parking suspension for the van. Manchester, Salford, Trafford and the other boroughs each run their own schemes.

Your moving date

Late September and June are busy in the student areas, and Fridays and month ends are busy everywhere.

Optional extras

Packing and storage are available and priced separately from the move itself.

Our long distance removals page lists Swansea to Manchester from around £650 for a two bed home as an indicative starting point. Bigger homes and harder access will cost more. Tips for moving to Manchester

Book the goods lift and loading bay

If you are moving into an apartment in the city centre, Salford Quays or Ancoats, contact the building manager as soon as you have a date. Ask about lift bookings, lift protection and how long the van can stay in the bay.

Watch the student calendar

Fallowfield, Withington and Rusholme fill up with student moves at the start and end of the academic year. Avoid those weeks if you can, or plan parking well ahead.

Check access before moving day

Victorian terraces often have narrow hallways and tight stairs. Measure your larger items and send us photos if you are unsure something will fit.

Be realistic about keys

Ask your solicitor or agent for a likely key release time. If it is going to be late, a two day plan usually works out better than a rushed single day.
