Moving from Swansea to Bristol
Bristol is the nearest big English city to Swansea, and people move between the two for jobs, university and family. It is a short enough trip that the drive is rarely the hard part.
Because the journey is short, a Bristol move behaves more like a long local move than a true long distance one. You get more flexibility on timings, and the cost is usually lower than for London or anywhere further north. It is also a popular choice for people moving from Wales to England for the first time, since you are only just over the border.
The drive from Swansea to Bristol
We take the M4 east past Port Talbot, Bridgend, Cardiff and Newport, then cross the Severn on the Prince of Wales Bridge, the crossing that used to be called the Second Severn Crossing. Tolls on both Severn bridges were scrapped at the end of 2018, so there is nothing to pay in either direction.
Once over the bridge, the way into Bristol depends on where you are going. The M32 suits the centre and the north and east of the city, while the A4 Portway along the Avon Gorge is handy for Clifton and Hotwells. The usual hold ups are around Newport and the Brynglas Tunnels, plus the M32 at rush hour. For most moves we allow about an hour and a half of driving, more on a Friday afternoon.
One day, with room to breathe
Swansea to Bristol is almost always done in a single day, even for larger houses. With only around 1.5 hours on the road, most of the day goes on careful loading and unloading rather than driving.
That spare time is useful. If your Bristol keys are released late, we can load in Swansea at a steady pace and still unload before evening. Very large homes, or moves that include a full packing service, may be split over two days, with the packing done the day before.
What affects the price of a Swansea to Bristol move
Bristol moves generally cost less than longer routes because there is less fuel and fewer hours on the road. These are the things that still change the price.
How much you are moving
On a short route like this, volume is the biggest single factor. It sets the van size, the crew size and how long loading takes.
Hills, steps and stairs
Parts of Bristol are very steep, and many older houses in Clifton, Cotham, Kingsdown and Totterdown have front steps or narrow stairs. More carrying means a longer job.
Parking and permits
A lot of inner Bristol is covered by residents parking zones. Check with Bristol City Council whether your street needs a parking suspension for the van, and give them as much notice as you can.
The Clean Air Zone
Bristol has a Clean Air Zone covering the city centre, with charges for vehicles that do not meet its emissions standards. Send us your postcode and we will check whether your address is inside it.
Your moving date
Weekdays away from the end of the month are usually easier to book. Late September is busy around the university areas.
Optional extras
Packing and storage are available if you need them and are priced on top of the removal.
Our long distance removals page puts a typical two bed move from Swansea to Bristol at roughly £400 to £800. Smaller moves can come in under that. For a figure based on your own items, use the moving cost calculator or ask for a free removal quote.
Tips for moving to Bristol
Check your own car against the Clean Air Zone
If you are driving your own car or a hired van into the centre, check it on the government vehicle checker before you go, as daily charges apply to vehicles that do not meet the standard.
Plan around term dates
Streets around the University of Bristol, Clifton and Redland get busy in late September and again in June. If your date falls then, sort parking well ahead.
Think about the stairs
Many Bristol terraces have narrow staircases and tight turns. Measure large pieces before you move and tell us about anything that might need to come apart.
Harbourside and city centre flats
Newer blocks in the centre and around the Harbourside usually have a loading area and a lift that needs booking. Ask your managing agent for the rules and pass them on to us.
Use the spare time
Because the drive is short, you can often hand back the keys in Swansea after the van leaves and still reach Bristol in time to show the crew where everything goes.
