Why a moving checklist matters

Moving house is consistently ranked as one of the most stressful life events — and the primary reason is not the physical effort, but the sheer number of tasks that can slip through the cracks. Notifying the DVLA, redirecting post, arranging parking suspensions, defrosting the freezer, returning borrowed items: individually each task is simple, but collectively they form a web that is easy to get tangled in without a clear plan.

A good moving checklist does two things. First, it spreads the work over weeks rather than days, so no single point in the process becomes overwhelming. Second, it accounts for your specific circumstances — a student move looks very different from a five-bedroom family house move, and a business relocation involves an entirely different set of stakeholders and logistics.

Our checklist generator builds a personalised timeline in seconds. Select your move type (house, flat, office or student), the services you need (packing, storage, piano removal, pets, fragile items, furniture assembly), enter your moving date, and specify how many rooms you have. The tool then produces a structured checklist grouped by timeline — from eight weeks out right through to after the move — with every item specific to your situation.

You can tick items off directly on screen as you complete them, and a progress bar tracks your overall completion. When you are ready, print the checklist or download it as a PDF to keep on the fridge or share with family members helping on moving day. We have helped hundreds of families move across South Wales, and this checklist reflects everything we have seen people forget — so you don't have to.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I start preparing for a house move?

Ideally, start planning 6–8 weeks before your moving date. This gives you time to book a removal company (which can fill up quickly, especially in summer), begin decluttering, redirect your post, and notify utility providers. Leaving it to the last two weeks significantly increases stress and the chance of something being forgotten.

What is the most important thing to pack first when moving house?

Pack a dedicated "first night" essentials box last — so it comes off the van first. Include a kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, a change of clothes, toiletries, important documents, and bedding. Everything else can wait to be unpacked, but a good night's sleep and a hot drink on moving day make a huge difference.

Do I need to notify DVLA and HMRC when I move house?

Yes. You are legally required to update your driving licence address with the DVLA within 30 days of moving — failing to do so can result in a fine of up to £1,000. You should also update HMRC, your bank, your GP, and the electoral roll. Our checklist includes reminders for all of these in the relevant timeline sections.
