Removals from Swansea to Edinburgh
Moving from Swansea to Edinburgh is normally a two day job. The drive is around 400 to 420 miles via the M5, M6, A74(M) and M74, roughly 7.5 to 8 hours in a removal van before traffic, and drivers hours rules mean a crew cannot safely load, drive and unload in one day. We usually load in Swansea on day one, stop overnight on the way north and unload in Edinburgh on day two.

Moving from Swansea to Edinburgh
Edinburgh is about as far as most moves from Swansea go. The van crosses Wales, the length of England and a good part of southern Scotland before it reaches your door.
A move this long needs a different plan from a London or Bristol job. It is less about the van and more about time: legal driving limits, rest breaks, where the crew stops for the night, and what the access will be like when we arrive at a tenement stair.
The drive from Swansea to Edinburgh
We head east on the M4 to the M5 near Bristol, north on the M5 to the M6 at Birmingham, then up the M6 past Stoke, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. Over the border the road becomes the A74(M) and then the M74, and the final stretch into Edinburgh is on A roads.
The distance is around 400 to 420 miles depending on exactly where you start and finish. A car might manage it in about seven hours without stopping. A loaded removal van is slower, needs regular breaks and has to get through the M6 around Birmingham, so we plan on 7.5 to 8 hours of driving before traffic and weather. In winter the high ground at Shap in Cumbria and Beattock in southern Scotland can bring wind and snow, and we keep an eye on forecasts in the days before your move.
Why Edinburgh is usually a two day move
Drivers of larger removal vehicles must follow drivers hours rules. In broad terms these limit daily driving to around nine hours and require a 45 minute break after four and a half hours at the wheel. Add three or four hours of loading in Swansea and a similar time unloading in Edinburgh, and a single day would be far too long to do safely.
So we split it. On day one we load in Swansea and drive part of the way north, stopping overnight with the loaded van locked and the crew close by. On day two we finish the drive and unload in Edinburgh with fresh legs for the stairs. If it suits your date of entry better, we can load and drive most of the way on day one and unload first thing on day two.
The overnight stop adds accommodation and a second day of crew time, which is one reason Edinburgh costs more than shorter routes.
What affects the price of a Swansea to Edinburgh move
Edinburgh is the most expensive of our regular routes because of the distance, the second day and the overnight stop. Within that, these are the things that change your quote.
How much you are moving
On a move this long, everything needs to go in one trip. A second run to Scotland would cost far more than getting the van size right first time, so an accurate list of items really matters.
Two days of crew time
The crew is with your belongings for two days, with fuel for around 800 miles there and back plus an overnight stay. These costs apply whatever the size of the move.
Tenement stairs
Many Edinburgh flats are in tenements with a shared stone stair and no lift. Carrying a sofa up three or four flights of a turning stair takes time and sometimes extra hands, so tell us the floor when you ask for a quote.
Parking permits
Large parts of central Edinburgh are controlled parking zones. Check with the City of Edinburgh Council whether you need a parking suspension or permit for the van, and apply early.
The Low Emission Zone
Edinburgh has a Low Emission Zone in the city centre, enforced since 2024, with penalties for vehicles that do not meet its standards. We check the delivery address against it when planning.
Time of year
In August the festivals bring road closures and heavy traffic to the centre. Other months are usually easier, and winter weather can affect the drive north.
Our long distance removals page gives an indicative starting point of around £900 for a two bed home moving from Swansea to Edinburgh. Because of the two day plan, the final figure depends heavily on volume and access, so use the moving cost calculator for a rough idea and then ask for a free removal quote for an accurate price.
Tips for moving to Edinburgh
Find out about the stair
Ask the seller or letting agent which floor the flat is on, how wide the stair is and how tight the turns are. Some pieces that fit easily into a Swansea semi will not go up a narrow tenement stair.
Let your neighbours know
In a tenement the stair is shared. A quick note to neighbours about your moving date helps keep the stair clear while we carry things up.
Avoid August if you can
The festivals fill the city centre with crowds and closures. If your dates are flexible, another month is usually easier.
Check your own car for the LEZ
If you are driving up in an older car, check whether it meets the Low Emission Zone standards before you drive into the city centre.
Keep essentials with you
Most people travel up by train or car while the van makes its way north. Keep bedding, chargers, documents and medication with you, as the van may arrive the day after you set off.

Swansea to Edinburgh removals FAQs
How much does a removal from Swansea to Edinburgh cost?
It depends mostly on how much you are moving, the access in Edinburgh and the two day plan. As an indicative starting point, a two bed home is from around £900. Use our moving cost calculator for a rough figure or ask for a free quote for an accurate price.
How long does a Swansea to Edinburgh move take?
Usually two days. The drive alone is roughly 7.5 to 8 hours over around 400 to 420 miles, and with loading and unloading added it is too long for one day. Most moves load on day one and unload on day two.
Why can a Swansea to Edinburgh move not be done in one day?
Drivers hours rules limit how long a driver can be at the wheel each day and require regular breaks. Loading, driving over 400 miles and unloading up a tenement stair in one go would push past those limits, or leave a very tired crew carrying your furniture late at night.
Can you carry furniture up a tenement stair?
Yes. Tell us the floor and send photos of the stair if you can. Narrow turns sometimes mean taking items apart first, and we plan the crew size around the number of flights.
Do you move people from Edinburgh to Swansea?
Yes. We cover the route in both directions, with the same two day plan and overnight stop.
Can you store my things if my date of entry is later?
Yes. If you need to leave Swansea before you can get into your Edinburgh home, we can keep your belongings in storage and deliver them when you are ready.
