How Much to Tip Removal Guys in the UK

EL Removals Team 9 September 2026 5 min read

This comes up in almost every move we do, usually asked quietly just as the van is being loaded. Unlike restaurant tipping, there is no fixed rule in the UK removals industry, but there are clear norms most customers and most removal teams are comfortable with.

Is Tipping Expected?

No, tipping is not expected and no reputable removal company will ever ask for one or make you feel awkward for not offering. Your quote already covers the full cost of the job. That said, a tip is always appreciated when the team has worked hard, been careful with your belongings, and gone the extra mile, and most crews will happily accept one if offered.

How Much Is Reasonable

As a general guide, £10 to £20 per person for a standard day is a common and welcome amount. For a bigger job, a long day, or a move that involved something particularly difficult such as a piano, a steep staircase, or awkward parking, £20 to £30 per person is more typical. If you are only having a small, quick job done, such as a single item delivery, £5 to £10 per person is perfectly reasonable.

Cash or Otherwise

Cash handed directly to the team at the end of the job is the simplest and most common method, since it goes straight to the people who did the work rather than being processed through a company account. If you do not have cash, a round of drinks, sandwiches, or a hot drink partway through a long day is also genuinely appreciated, even without a monetary tip on top.

When You Might Choose Not To

If something was damaged, the team was late without communication, or the service simply was not up to standard, there is no obligation to tip at all. It is worth raising any issues directly with the company afterwards regardless, as a good removal firm will want to know and put it right.

Other Ways to Say Thank You

If a tip is not something you want to give, a genuine thank you goes a long way, and so does a review. Most small removal companies rely heavily on Google and Checkatrade reviews to win new work, and a few honest sentences about your experience is often worth more to the business than a cash tip on the day.

In short: Tipping removal men in the UK is optional, never expected, and entirely down to how the job went and what you are comfortable with. There is no wrong answer, only a range of what is common.
